Eighth Grade Students Virtually Explored D.C.

S.A.
Director of Global Education Beth Yavenditti shares details about the eight grade virtual trip to Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., came to the Hilltop earlier this month when the eighth graders embarked on a virtual journey to our nation’s capital. The eighth grade team, in partnership with the Center for Leadership and Envoys, organized a two-day virtual trip for the students. While nothing can replace an in-person experience, students were able to explore the capital using Google Earth and other virtual resources provided by Envoys. They posed for pictures in front of major sites and enjoyed special lunches and treats throughout the two days. They also heard from young leaders Dustin Liu, who currently serves as the 9th U.S. Observer to the United Nations, and Sophia Kianni, a 19-year-old Iranian-American who founded Climate Cardinals, an international nonprofit that works to translate climate information into 100+ languages. Students learned about their journey into service and had the opportunity to ask questions about their work and leadership.

Students also worked in small groups to visit a museum of their choice and curate an online exhibit inspired by their exploration of the museum. “It was fun working in smaller groups and getting to show our takeaways from the museum experience.” Jessica Heine ‘25. The program culminated with the entire eighth grade participating in a virtual gallery walk. In between the visits to monuments and museums, students had some competitive Kahoot games, testing their knowledge of the city. They wrapped up each day with a grade-wide Bingo and smiles on their faces.
