Stormy Homecoming for St. Luke's Teams

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s 2021 Homecoming was a roaring success, with all six fall sports represented throughout the day.

On a beautiful, sunny day, the annual SLS Fun Run got the sporting events underway, with a record turnout of runners. Runners met outside the Athletic Center for a quick photo before heading out on the 3K course.

The next event of the day was a boys varsity soccer match against the King School at noon. The local rivals faced off in a hugely important FAA contest, which proved to be a heartbreaking 0-1 loss for the Storm. Mason Pratt ‘23 showed some heroics in the first few minutes of the game, including saving a penalty for St. Luke’s, but the stopper could do nothing to prevent the Vikings from taking the lead late in the first half. The Storm controlled the game for much of the second period, but couldn’t find the equalizing goal.

The next varsity match was volleyball, which took place inside Carey Gymnasium against The Masters School (New York). The Storm continued its unbeaten start to the season, dispatching the Panthers in straight sets for a 3-0 win.

On the Class of 2018 Field, varsity field hockey had a tough FAA matchup against Rye Country Day School. Andrea DiTeodoro ‘22 scored the St. Luke’s goal, but the team was denied victory in overtime as the Wildcats edged a thrilling contest 1-2. Ginny Caceres ‘24 had an outstanding game in goal, helped by stellar defensive performances from Olivia Jones ‘22 and Ella Miller ‘22.

Girls varsity soccer dispatched its Homecoming opponent in impressive style, beating The Masters School 7-1 on the Class of 2015 Field. Senior captain Ali Gall opened the scoring after 13 minutes. Ten minutes later, a stunning strike from fellow senior captain Layla Magnussen made it 2-0. A goal from Mackenzie Nelson ‘23 and two from Cam Nelson ‘25 made it 5-0 St. Luke’s before halftime. Lena Olbrys ‘25 and Sarah Lau ‘24 completed the scoring for St. Luke’s in the second half.

Varsity football played the final game of the day against Portsmouth Abbey School. The Storm raced into a 15-0 lead in the first quarter but was pegged back by the Ravens in the second period, trailing 15-16 at halftime. With the help of a boisterous homecoming crowd, SLS regained its composure in the third quarter and scored 13 unanswered points, leading 28-16. The Storm added another touchdown in the fourth quarter and, with some outstanding defense, held Portsmouth Abbey scoreless in the second half to win 35-16. Senior quarterback Everett Andersen had another terrific game that included three touchdown passes, a two-point conversion run, and a 52-yard rushing touchdown. Roderick Olson ‘23 had more than 100 yards rushing, and Matt O’Connor ‘22 had two touchdowns for the Storm.
