St. Luke’s Celebrates National French Week

By: Jon Shee, World Language Department Chair
Venez découvrir le monde Francophone! Come discover the French-speaking world!

From Nov. 8-12, the World Language Department will celebrate National French Week—a St. Luke’s tradition for over two decades! French is a rapidly growing language and poised to become the third most spoken language worldwide by 2050.

This year, students will have a chance to explore Francophone music genres from around the world. Banners highlighting the different genres of French-language music will be on display, and French students will make decorations and informational posters. French teachers will also share French language playlists for students to tune in to.

On Monday, Nov. 8, St. Luke’s alumna Catherine Simonson Hannon ‘10 will deliver a special presentation to Middle School students. Upper School students may sign up to hear her speak during the Center for Leadership’s Lunch & Lead. Hannon will talk about her work in marketing and risk technology and how French played an important role in growing her career.

Flik will feature foods from different Francophone countries during lunch, and the library will have Francophone books on display.

On Friday, Mademoiselle Briggs will make fresh crêpes during both lunches. Students can earn a ticket to enjoy this delicious treat by correctly answering trivia questions based on Francophone music information posted around the school.

St. Luke’s French students are invited to participate in the AATF National Francophone Culture Trivia Contest, which Jon Shee co-coordinates at the national level, and the AATF National French Week Media Contest. Last year’s media contest produced three winners from St. Luke’s at the national level: Ali DeFilippo '25, Ryan DeFilippo '22, and Jon Shee’s AP French class.

The World Language Department is delighted to celebrate both the French language and Francophone culture each year.

Vive le français!
