At the State of the School, Head of Upper School Liz Perry described Student-Led Learning as “a shift from ‘doing school’ to learning with a purpose, ensuring that all graduates know how to direct their learning, spot opportunities, build and work with a team, and reflect on their growth.” This approach, a central pillar of St. Luke’s Strategic Plan, came to life during an inventive, hands-on group project. History Teacher Abby Abbott shares more:
Ninth grade students in Ms. Zuckert’s and my ancient history classes have spent the last three weeks exploring the world of Ancient Egypt. In partnership with the designLab, te(A)ch tech, and the Art Department, students constructed an Egyptian Mini Museum to drive and demonstrate their learning. Inspired by the Egyptian belief in the power of images, students curated and created artifacts to express a chosen theme, ranging from cosmetics to cats and showcasing a diverse, in-depth range of interests. Containing tangible items like mummies, postiches (pharaonic false beards!), and jewelry, the exhibit blends the virtual and physical world by using QR codes to show the actual artifacts on display in the world’s most renowned museums. The students also created the papyrus capital columns and the post and lintel entryway, transforming the gallery into an Egyptian tomb.
