Boys Squash Finish Third At New Englands

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s boys varsity squash team enjoyed a fantastic trip to the New England Prep School Boys Team Championships, finishing third overall in Class D.

The Storm traveled to Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island as the No. 4 seed in its class and faced the host team in the quarterfinal matchup on Saturday, Feb. 9.

St. Luke’s found itself down 1-3 after the first three matches but staged a magnificent comeback to win 4-3 against the Ravens. Peter Cioffi ‘23 won his match 3-1, playing in the number two spot, before Will Drapkin ‘24, Holden Prymas ‘25, and Nihaal Kochar ‘24 completed the victory for SLS, all winning 3-0.

Later that day, the Storm was pitted against the No. 1 seed and eventual champions, Middlesex School from Concord, Massachusetts. Kaan Savasoglu ‘23 put St. Luke’s on the board, winning his match in the number one position. Peter Etergino ‘23 made it 2-2, winning the number four match. Unfortunately, St. Luke’s was edged out in the remaining matches by a very talented Zebra roster and eventually lost 2-5.

St. Luke’s was back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 10, competing in the third place match against No. 3 seeded Buckingham Browne & Nichols School from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Storm trailed 0-3 before another epic comeback. Etergino lost the first set but stormed back to win 3-1 in the number four match. Drapkin produced excellent squash, winning his contest 3-0, and Prymas and Kochar won their matches 3-1, recording a 4-3 victory.

Head Coach Brian Mathias was thrilled with his team’s efforts: “The boys were diligent in their preparation, which allowed them to bounce back from a tough defeat in the semifinals to score an upset and finish ahead of their seeding. They’re in a great position to finish the season with a strong performance at Nationals next weekend.”

St. Luke’s boys varsity squash will travel to the 2022 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in Pennsylvania, starting on Friday, Feb. 27.
