Hockey & Squash Wrap Up With Tournament Play
The St. Luke’s hockey team’s season ended in a heartbreaking, overtime loss to King School in the FAA Championship game on Saturday, Feb. 26.
The two teams played a thrilling contest in front of a boisterous crowd inside Rye Country Day School’s ice rink, but it was the Vikings who found the crucial OT goal to win 3-4.
St. Luke’s had the early lead after captain Henry Robb ‘22 scored. They held onto the 1-0 advantage until King School tied the game at 1-1, with eight minutes to play in the second period. The Storm responded just a couple of minutes later to take a 2-1 lead, with Robb scoring his second goal on a power play.
The Vikings hit back with their own power play just seconds into the third period, making it 2-2. With just 2:56 left to play in regulation time, King School appeared to have won the contest after scoring its third goal.
However, the St. Luke’s puck squad was not yet finished. Eoin Mueller ‘23 responded with a magnificent goal to tie the game at 3-3 with the clock ticking away.
Unfortunately for the Storm, it was the Vikings who found the game-ending goal 10 minutes into extra period, but St. Luke’s hockey should be beyond proud of its efforts.
Boys and girls squash traveled to Philadelphia for the 2022 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships. Both finished the weekend with a 2-2 record.
The St. Luke’s boys team lost its first match against the No. 3 seed Westminster School (Connecticut) before edging out a close contest against New Haven Squash 4-3. Kaan Savasoglu ‘23, Peter Cioffi ‘23, Jack Lyons ‘24, and Will Drapkin ‘24 won their matches to give the team the victory.
The Storm then found itself on the opposite end of another close match when competing against Brooks School. Cioffi, Lyons, and Drapkin won again, but it wasn’t quite enough. The Storm fell 3-4.
St. Luke’s finished its season on a high note, though, winning its final match against Shady Side Academy 4-3. Drapkin picked up his third win of the tournament before Holden Prymas ‘25, Nihaal Kocher ‘24, and Peter Lewis ‘24 secured the win for St. Luke’s.
In the girls tournament, St. Luke’s was pitted against the No. 3 seed Westminster School (Georgia), losing 1-6, with captain Olivia Jones ‘22 picking up a win.
The Storm responded and won its next match against the No. 6 seed Squash Smarts from West Philadelphia. Jones, Gigi McWhorter ‘25, Catherine Clark ‘22, and Sloan Barker ‘22 picked up wins for SLS to edge out their opponent 4-3.
