Lunchtime Music Returns for Spring

By: Ross James, Upper School English Teacher
Our student musicians have been keeping the spirit of song alive throughout the fall and winter. Now with spring in the air, they are ready once again to perform outside for the Upper School lunch crowds in the upcoming Music on the Green performance series, with dates coming soon.

The fall series Music on the Plaza went off without a hitch. Musicians Tommy Lewis ‘22 and Calvin Strothenke ‘22, our resident performers, played an array of cover songs under sunny skies on alternate Fridays. One fine Friday, Abby Thomas ‘23 graced the Be Kind Plaza stage with her vocal talents. Before closing out the music series, Student Council rounded up the vocalists on campus for an outdoor Coffee House event.

With cold weather pushing everyone indoors, Tommy and Calvin kept the flame alive by playing impromptu for the lunch crowds in early February. Then, a return of Coffee House in mid-February featured a host of other amazing St. Luke’s student musicians. Will Stamoulis ‘22 teamed up with Calvin for a set of throwback covers; Sofia Shklovsky ‘23 captivated listeners with her soulful singing; Abby and Calvin commanded the stage once again, and Laurel Aronian ‘25 and Alex Sheinkin ‘25 wowed the crowd with their guitar duo and stunning harmonies. Veteran musician Jim Foley, St. Luke’s Assistant Head of School for Leadership & Innovation, made a last-minute guest appearance, with Calvin on accompaniment to top off the event.

Music soothes the spirit, and we have our fantastic student musicians to thank for sharing their voices and bringing light year-round.
