It is with profound sadness that the St. Luke’s community announces the death of veteran high school coach Jerry McDougall on October 12, 2011. Mr. McDougall died of leukemia surrounded by friends and family members. He was 76. McDougall was pre-deceasedby his wife Loretta ‘Lolly’ in 2001.
Few coaches have had more success, or are more respected, than McDougall, whose 44-year career started at the former Central Catholic High School in Norwalk. McDougall coached Trumbull's baseball team for 32 years, ending in 2005 with a record of 466-221, with three league and two state championships. When McDougall retired as the head football coach at Trumbull in 1998 after 34 seasons, he had a record of 265-126-9, the most victories in the state at the time. He led the Eagles to four Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships and seven appearances in the state final, with three titles.
St. Luke’s Headmaster Emeritus Richard Whitcomb coaxed McDougall out of retirement in 2009. The venerable McDougall, agreed to serve as the varsity football defensive coordinator at St. Luke's, a private school in New Canaan, where Whitcomb was once the football coach, athletic director and headmaster.
“In his two seasons with our student athletes McDougall brought his special talents to our field, working with and forming lasting friendships with the players and as an avid supporter of our football program,” said Mark Davis, St. Luke’s Head of School.
The McDougall’s children, Jerry McDougall, Jr. and Lauren McDougall Jorgensen are St. Luke’s alumni.
McDougall is a member of the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame for football and the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame for both football and baseball and the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame.
