Youth defines St. Luke's baseball this season, which features seven seniors on the varsity roster and will have a number of key cogs bouncing between varsity and junior varsity to gain as much valuable experience as possible. Seniors Griffin Miller '13, Robert Morris '13, Charlie Nelson '13, Christian Walsh '13, John Wilson '13, Eliot Henson '13, and Tyler Gabriele '13 lead the way for St. Luke's, along with Morgan Simmonds '14, and a slew of young talent. According to the coaches, this year's edition of the Storm is the closest knit group that they have had on the Hilltop, which makes for a great atmosphere and solid chemistry on and off the field. BJ Buckle '16, Tyler Brandt '15, and Will Twomey '15 will all play significant roles on both the varsity and JV rosters this season, and should take leadership roles on both teams.
The FAA has long been a conference known for pitching, but this season the batters have caught up, which could lead to an adjustment period for many of the league's schools. St. Luke's has started the year 0-2 after a pair of losses to tough teams from Gunnery and Rye Country Day, but look to rebound with a win on Tuesday in a match-up against Greens Farms Academy.
Golf:
Varsity Golf returns ten and adds three new players this season, giving the team very strong experience and depth. The team has very strong senior leadership, returning All-League player Jacob Henny '13 and FAA Honorable Mention Jake Hamill '13. The team has four seniors with match experience, and adds Cameron Chottiner '16 who should be a contributor in tournaments this season.
The FAA season is very short, and the year's final tournament goes a long way towards determining the league champion, making each match incredibly important. St. Luke's has been incredibly successful in the league over the last few years, coming in either first or second in eight of the last nine seasons. Brunswick won the FAA in 2012 and will be looking to defend their championship this year, while Rye and King both have quickly improving programs who will look to break into the top of the standings. St. Luke's golf tees off this Thursday at New Canaan Country Club in a match against South Kent School.
Boys Lacrosse:
Expectations are high for St. Luke's boys' varsity lacrosse. Coming off of a great 2012 season, the Storm look to add another FAA championship to the trophy case and make a run for a New England crown. The team loses a few key players from last year's team, but the program's depth should allow them to rebound and contend for the top of the FAA once again. Senior captains Mack Dowling '13, Sam Drews '13, and Andrew Sudano '13 all provide leadership in key spots. Dowling has been on the team since the eighth grade and is the team's top midfielder. Sudano is the team's top defender and will attempt to take away the top opposing scorer in each game. Peter Baritz '14 is the lead attackman for the Storm, and is in his fourth year as a starter.
The FAA features a number of strong teams this year, and St. Luke's schedule will be very tough, especially in the beginning of the season. The team lost its opener against Hopkins School 5-2, and but came back with a key 9-8 win over Suffield. The team has big games against Hamden Hall, and Gunnery early on before the schedule lightens up a bit down the stretch. The May 8 game at Canterbury could very well serve as a bellweather game for St. Luke's, and games against Kingswood-Oxford will also be very important this year.
Girls Lacrosse:
Storm girls lacrosse is in its first year under new head coach Amanda Williams, who looks to make the program a fixture at the top of the FAA standings. The team features seven seniors who will play major roles this year: Lindsay Bralower '13, Taylor Callaghan '13, Christie Kuehner '13, Taylor Lopez-Balboa '13, Caroline Parsons '13, Maggie Sullivan '13, and Maddie Van Elslander '13. Parsons and Bralower will shoulder a lot of the offensive load for the Storm, while Finley Frechette '16 and Gillis Frechette '17 also help spark the offense. Nijah Wilson '14 is one of the team's top defenders, and will help lead a developing group in front of goalies Juliana Soltys '15, Molly Pivirotto '14, and Rebecca Leonard '16. The team looks to control the ball and work it around for good shots on offense in order to dictate the game's pace.
The Storm opened the year with a 20-8 loss to a very strong Greens Farms Academy team, but was able to come back and grab a big 17-9 win over Portledge on Thursday, in which Parsons and Finely Frechette combined for 11 goals. The Storm are still coming together under the new coaching staff, but they should consistently improve during the Spring and have their eyes on a winning season.
Softball:
Storm softball returns the nucleus of a 13-4 team, and should make waves in the FAA this Spring. The team features two ace pitchers - Marissa Ruschil '15 who notched 142 strike-outs in 14 games last season, and Jamie Schlim '15. Each will play second base when the other takes the mound. They are two of the league's premier pitchers and each has multiple pitches which will keep opposing batters off-balance this season. Janay Parrott '13 will be behind the plate this season, making for a strong battery every game. Jenny Price '13 will start at first base and is one of the team's leaders along with Janay, while third year starter Sasha Clark '14 returns at shortstop. Ally Frattaroli '14 plays third base and rounds out a strong, experienced infield.
St. Luke's outfield is very young, but greatly benefitted from the trip to Florida this Spring. Deja Jordan '14, Monika Gabriele '15, Avery Bachman '15, Elizabeth Kremer '15, and Elizabeth Guillen '15 will all see time there this season, and the unit should improve with more experience. The team also adds newcomers Hannah Smock '15, Ali Trager '16, and Allie Works '16 who will compete for time in the outfield.
Greenwich Academy, King, Greens Farms Academy, and Holy Child will all be very strong this season, but coach Camille DeMarco-Havens is confident that her team will rise to the challenge this season: "Competition will be good so we're going to have to work, but we have the makings of a solid defensive team. Our bats are just beginning to wake up." SLS opened the season with a 10-3 win over Canterbury, in which Schlim struck out 17 batters, and the team followed it up with an 8-2 win over Chase Collegiate School this past Friday.
Boys Tennis:
Storm boys tennis returns a number of experienced players this season, and have their sights on a successful Spring. Co-captain Max Macey '13 is one of the league's top players, and should help keep St. Luke's competitive against the FAA's top talent this season. Co-captain Wiley Vehslage '13 is in his fifth year on the varsity squad for St. Luke's, and is an effective counter-punch player. The team's final co-captain Gardner Tregellas '14 plays an aggressive brand of tennis and spends a lot of time at the net, which makes him a poor match-up for many players. Powell Robinson '13 will also compete in singles and is a top doubles player for the Storm.
The FAA should be quite difficult this season with nationally ranked powers Brunswick and Hopkins in the league. King and Rye are both strong as well, and should prove to be good tests for the Storm. The team suffered a tough early season 4-3 loss to GFA, but came back with a big 7-0 win over Canterbury over the weekend. The season continues on April 15 with a match against Hackley.
Girls Tennis:
Sanjana Chintalapudi '13 leads this year's girls tennis team this Spring as the top singles player and team captain. The team also features seniors Allie Christopher '13 and Cassie Christopher '13, Madeliene Ker '13, and Daniele Coxe '13, who will all play singles for the Storm. Laura Howells '16 and Grace Hennemuth '14 will also both compete and add youth to a senior-laden squad. The team adds a number of new players, including Annabel Holland '15, Emma Tregellas '17, Tess Tregellas '15, and Catty Seiler '15, Haley Overlander '15, and Elizabeth Pellegrino '16.
SLS has hovered around the .500 mark for the last few years, but should look to take a step forward and clinch a winning season this year. Greenwich Academy, Sacred Heart, and league champion GFA are the class of the FAA, and will pose the biggest challenge in 2013. The team opens its season with Hopkins on Tuesday, April 9, at home.
