Eighth Grade Visits Nation’s Capital

In November, St. Luke’s Class of 2024 visited our nation’s capital for the annual eighth-grade Washington, D.C. trip. The 76 students in attendance went to several historical sites, including the WWII Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Holocaust Museum, and National Museum of African American History & Culture.

Students prepared for the three-day trip by acting as tour guides for their peers, using self-created brochures and slide presentations that featured various memorials, monuments and museums. After returning to school, the history classes broke into groups to make digital diaries of their trip, highlighting three landmarks and linking them to a relevant theme, such as honor, sacrifice and courage. Finally, the trip served as a pivotal experience in preparation for the upcoming memorial creation project, which will take place this spring. Partnering with the DesignLab, students will design memorials to honor individuals, groups, or events in American history that they believe are underrepresented and deserve commemorating. Washington, D.C. is home to some of our most powerful national memorials and monuments and served as a great launch pad for this upcoming project.

Thanks to St. Luke’s faculty Susan Bralower, Mark Chuhta, Brinley Ehlers, Kimberly Geradi, Chris Phelps, Pat Raffaele and Sarah Westerberg-Egan for chaperoning the trip.
