Fifth Grade Students Learn the History of Veterans Day

S.A.
St. Luke’s fifth-graders in Jane Olsen’s social studies classes spent Veterans Day learning the history of WWI and taking time to share the stories of people in their lives, including veterans in the St. Luke’s community. Olsen shared the following about her classes.

I started the class by giving each student a map of Europe in World War I. The students analyzed and discussed the map. This allowed them to learn a little bit about the War’s history, along with practicing map-reading skills that we have been developing all year. Then we talked about Armistice Day and Veterans Day and spoke about two staff members at St. Luke’s who are veterans. Some kids shared about family members who served, while some talked about Veterans Day programs they participated in at their former schools. Then we read, discussed, and listened to two performances of "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae (Leonard Cohen reading and a children's choir performing a poem’s musical arrangement).
