designLab Director Michael Mitchell talks about a couple of the many camps, courses and workshops being offered here on the Hilltop during Summer at St. Luke's.
From designLab Director Michael Mitchell:
As we are about to enter the 5th summer of St. Luke’s Makers Camp, it’s exciting to see how it has grown and evolved. When we first launched the program in the summer of 2013, the goal was to share some of the most interesting aspects of our Upper School STEM electives with our Middle School students. Now the Makers Camp serves as a proving ground for new ideas and technologies, with rising Middle School students getting early access to pilot programs that may eventually find their way into the classroom. Take the Raspberry Pi camp, for example. I traveled to Glasgow, Scotland during the fall of 2016 for an intensive two-day workshop on the single board computer, and from that experience, the Raspberry Pi Makers Camp was born. With the help of curious and inquisitive campers, we explore all that the platform has to offer, aspects of which will be integrated into upcoming designLab courses.
A new offering this summer is the Pre-AP Computer Science Bootcamp. As more and more students are becoming interested in computer science, this course offers them exposure to the fundamentals of Java programming. All that is covered helps computer science students begin the year with confidence. We’re also rerunning the summer version of Foundations of Computer Science as an excellent way for students to add an elective outside of the typical school calendar. This online course gives St. Luke’s Upper School students the chance get a jump start on designLab programs, meet a STEM scholars’ requirement during the summer, or simply try something they might not get to during the school year.
Excitement is also building for the new, dedicated designLab space in the new Art & Humanities Wings opening this fall. There, students will have the room to make large, creative ideas into a physical reality. The growth of the designLab courses and workspace will be a great addition to our thriving project-based learning here on the Hilltop.
