Ninth graders in Honors World Literature classes taught by Jennifer Sproule and myself staged incredible scenes from “Julius Caesar” this week, with a twist: Each student memorized and presented a dramatic monologue from William Shakespeare’s great tragedy to a single member of the St. Luke’s faculty. They were inspired by “Theatre for One,” a mobile performance space that launched during COVID-19 where an actor performs for a solo audience member.
Every performance was unique and mysterious: Clad in costumes that ranged from togas to business suits and with swords and scrolls in hand, the actors brought characters like Mark Antony, Portia, and, of course, Julius Caesar, to life.
Watching the performance via Zoom, each faculty member in attendance experienced a one-of-a-kind show all alone. After delivering their pieces, students gathered with their faculty audience to share details of their experience and some (virtual) applause.
Many thanks to TE(A)CH team members Bryan DeVissiere and Alexa Foley for their help in creating this project!
