SLS 6th Special Olympics - Davis Receives Presidents Award

Dan Lyons
Continuing a proud relationship with the Special Olympics of Connecticut, St. Luke's hosted an SOCT Unified Basketball tournament for the sixth straight year on Monday.
The event, which included athletes from New Canaan HS, Greenwich HS, Westhill HS, Trumbull HS, Hillcrest MS, Tomlinson MS, Fairfield Ludlowe HS, Danbury HS, and the New Canaan YMCA, was hosted in the St. Luke's Athletic Center, and included many volunteers from the St. Luke's student body.  To SLS athletic director Kevin Butler, this is one of the best things that the school is involved in: "It is one of my favorite days on the hilltop all year. Our students do a wonderful job hosting and volunteering on the afternoon."

Butler and Kate Parker-Burgard were honored with the SOCT President's Award in the fall, presented to those who have "made a significant impact on the organization as evidenced by their length of service to SOCT, their impact on our athletes personally, and/or the magnitude of a service they have provided”.  On Monday, another member of the St. Luke's community was presented with the award, Head of School Mark Davis.  From SOCT's Vice President Kate Careb: “Mark Davis is exactly the type of leader we are thrilled to honor with the Special Olympics Connecticut President’s Award.  Mark has been a champion for our athletes and the Special Olympic Movement here in Connecticut for many years.  Mark understands the importance of sports and the value of including and recognizing ALL athletes.  His vision for including the student’s of St. Luke’s School in the Special Olympics Movement, by hosting the annual SOCT/ CAS-CIAC Unified Basketball tournament, is best seen in his student’s kind, enthusiastic and interactive moments with our athletes”.

In accepting the award, Davis also touched on the special relationship between the school and the organization: "I am touched by the award, of course, and will treasure it - not for what I have done particularly, but for what it signifies about a great partnership between SOCT and St. Luke's - both organizations are living their missions, a beautiful thing."
