“How To Raise an Adult” Author Comes to St. Luke’s

VGP
On Wednesday, How to Raise An Adult author Julie Lythcott-Haims came to the Hilltop to speak with St. Luke’s faculty, staff, students and parents.

Her day started early with a 7:45am presentation given to the faculty & staff followed by a thoughtful Q&A session. During school, two assemblies were held: one for Middle School and another for Upper School. At the end of each assembly, Lythcott-Haims asked the students if there were any comments she should share with their parents. Some included:
  • “I don’t like it when my parent comes in and keeps asking ‘How’s your homework?’ I can’t get it done with they coming in every two seconds to ask ‘How’s your homework.’”
  • “My mom tells me when to do everything.”
  • “Don’t focus too much on one bad grade or one bad assignment.”
In the evening, approximately 170 parents gathered in the Seldin Performing Arts Center to listen to Lythcott-Haims, and engage in a Q&A session. Her extensive day at St. Luke’s concluded with a book signing. Head of Upper School Liz Perry shared, “Julie Lycott-Haims was warm, funny, smart, and hard-hitting in her talk. She presented a strong message to parents about how to step back and let their children do more for themselves. And, when she was done, our St. Luke's parents leapt to their feet and gave her a standing ovation.”

Thanks to the Parents’ Association in conjunction with the Middle and Upper School departments for making this special day happen.
