St. Luke's Boys Soccer: Season Preview

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Soccer team head into the 2017 campaign full of optimism and ready to make a run at the postseason.

Head coach Ryan Fairhurst is entering his second year with the Storm. He expects big things from this group of players. Fairhurst has been impressed with what he has seen during the first few weeks on the Hilltop: “The boys have worked extremely hard both with the technical aspects and the physical requirements of preseason. There has been great energy within the group so we are looking forward to the season getting underway.”

Fairhurst believes in playing a specific type of soccer built around possession and speed of play and thinks the team has the talent to make an impact: “I like to play the game the ‘right way.’ We really try to build from the back and get as many players involved as possible. We don’t want to play too many direct balls so we are looking to develop each and every player to make the team stronger. We have a very good technical group but maybe lack some size right now so I’m really looking for us to use our superior technical ability in a more physical environment.”

The Storm is captained by Ryan Neafsey ‘18 and Chase Zamit ‘18 and the head coach is confident that they will lead the team successfully: “Ryan and Chase bring so much to the team. Ryan really leads by example with his performances in goal where he has been outstanding and Chase is very vocal. Chase works extremely hard too which rubs off on the rest of the team.”

BVS finished the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 5-7-2 but Fairhurst is looking to improve that this fall and really make a push in both the FAA and New England playoffs: “Everyone within the group knows that we are looking to make this year's playoffs both for the FAA and New England tournament. I think Hopkins, Masters and GFA really paved the way last year and we should be looking to break into that group and start challenging the top teams in the FAA.”

St. Luke’s kicks off the season on Saturday 9/16 away to Millbrook before another road game on Saturday 9/23 against South Kent.
