St. Luke's Girls Varsity Tennis: Season Preview

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Tennis team is preparing for another successful season on the court with record numbers turning out for the Storm.

GVT finished the 2016-17 campaign with an overall record of 11-3 and captured the FAA doubles crown as well as defending the New England Class C title.

Co-Head Coaches Brinley Ehlers and Tish Tregellas are confident this year’s group of players can continue to compete for honors: “We have a lot of talent and depth on our roster again this year,” said Tregellas. “We have to be optimistic and go into every match with the mindset that we are going to win it.”

There are four new team members this season: Tyleigh Zammit ‘19, Georgia Rosenberg ‘19, Mia Mitchell ‘20, and Amelie Warneryd ‘20. Elizabeth Laub ‘18, who has played as the number one singles for the past three years, will play doubles with Cierra Kitt ‘19.

With Laub making the move to doubles, Ehlers and Tregellas have been watching closely to see who will take her place. They have been enthralled with the battle between Hannah Amendola ‘19 and Maddie Harris ‘19: “Hannah and Maddie have been playing very high-level singles and are competing for the top two singles positions,” Ehlers said. “The matches are extremely close every time they play, it has been great to watch. The number one singles position is an extremely tough position in this league but I think either one will do well there.”

The Storm will be captained by Laub and Caroline Nevin ‘18 who have both been on the roster since they were in eighth grade. According to Tregellas: “They are both great captains. They are kind, they are inclusive, they lead by example and they have the respect of the team. We are in good hands.”

The coaching staff has been very impressed with the quality of tennis throughout preseason which included the annual trip to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida. Ehlers was very pleased with the experience: “Florida was really fun. We took 12 players which is the most we have ever had attend. They get to hit a lot of tennis balls and work with the professional coaches so I think it was very productive.”

St. Luke’s only lost to Greenwich Academy and Hopkins School during FAA play last year so Ehlers expects this year’s squad to be just as competitive. She concluded: “We have a number of Juniors who are really strong and we have a really deep team. There is a lot of heart and they are all very good players. Tish and I are also really excited to be coaching together. It should be a really fun season.”

St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Tennis opens up with a road trip to Cheshire Academy on Tuesday, April 10 at 4:30pm before traveling to Canterbury School on Friday, April 13 for a 4:15pm match.
