Girls Tennis Downs Sacred Heart and GFA

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Tennis team won two of its three matches this week defeating Sacred Heart of Greenwich and Greens Farms Academy before falling to Hopkins School.

In an extremely busy week, the team took to the court three days in a row and improved to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in FAA play.

On Tuesday, May 1 the Storm hosted Sacred Heart and won an epic encounter 4-3. Elizabeth Laub ‘18 and Cierra Kitt ‘19 got things going for the home team winning the #1 doubles match and Maddie Harris '19 won the # 1 singles to give St. Luke’s a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers came roaring back with victories in the # 2 and 3 singles matches. The two teams then split the two remaining doubles matches with Carolina Warneyard ‘19 and Amelie Warneyard ‘20 winning their super tie-breaker 10-4.

With the overall match tied at 3-3 Grace Fitzgibbon’s battled back from one set down to take the crucial point winning her super tie-breaker 10-6.

Girls Varsity Tennis hosted again on Wednesday, May 2 when Greens Farms Academy made the short trip to the Hilltop. The Storm enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 win over the Dragons winning all but the # 1 singles match. Hanna Amendola ‘19, Caroline Nevin ‘18, and Fitzgibbons all won their singles matches while Laub/Kitt, Warneyard/Warneyard and Sadie Vehslage ‘20 and Mia Mitchell ‘20 completed a sweep in the doubles matchups.

The Storm rounded out its triple-header with a road trip to Hopkins on Thursday, May 3. A strong Hilltoppers team took advantage of some tired legs to prevent a perfect week for Luke’s in a 0-8 reverse.

The team continues its busy schedule with a trip to The Gunnery School on Saturday, May 5. Next week GVT has another road game at King School on Monday, May 7 before celebrating the seniors on Wednesday, May 9 against Storm King School.
