Storm Come Back To Sting Hornets

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball team moved to 8-0 in FAA league play on Tuesday, January 22, with a 72-68 victory at reigning Champions Hamden Hall.

This was the first time the two teams met this season and both had perfect conference records going into the contest. In a tremendously tight first half, St. Luke’s led early but were pegged back by the Hornets who went into the break up 37-35.

The home team came out strong after the interval and extended its lead to nine before the Storm came back in force.

After the lead changed hands seven times down the stretch, St. Luke’s would take it for good with just four seconds remaining in the game. With the score tied at 68-68, Gavin Greene ‘20 found a bucket picking up an offensive rebound after Jak’hai Washington ‘22 had nearly put it back with an offensive rebound of his own.

Chuck Clemons ‘20, who top-scored for the Storm with 16 points, then made arguably the biggest play of the day when he stole an inbound pass to effectively put the contest to bed. The Hornets had to foul twice, which put Greene to the line to hit two clutch free throws.

It was a great comeback from the Storm, and Head Coach Tony Newsom was proud of how his team responded to being down nine: “I really like how our team stayed together and played hard for 32 minutes. I thought our defense was solid and we did a great job of sharing the ball on offense.”

The two teams meet again in less than two weeks at St. Luke’s on Saturday, February 2 at 2pm.
