Kontulis Wins New England Squash Bracket

Daniel Clarke
Boys Varsity Squash enjoyed a terrific weekend at the New England Interscholastic Squash Association (NEISA) tournament as James Kontulis ‘21 won his bracket with Liam Patty ‘21 and Jack Conti ‘21 both finishing as runners-up in their groupings.

Competing in the C Division, #1 seed Kontulis made light work of his quarterfinal and semifinal contests to set up a championship match against Fotis Zafiriou from Somerville, MA. A New Canaan resident, Kontulis played some of his best squash to win in three games 12-10,11-8,11-9.

Patty won an epic quarterfinal against Eric Yoon in a back-and-forth match 12-10, 11-9, 2-11, 5-11,11-3. The sophomore captain recovered from losing the first game of the semifinal to Cameron Gaisford of West Newton, MA, to win 3-1, but fell in the final to Ewan Farr of Rye, NY.

Conti, playing in the IV bracket, won his quarterfinal in three games before battling to a five-game victory in the semifinal against Lucas Veloria of Concord Academy. That set up another final for St. Luke’s against James Ravalese from Kingswood Oxford School, but the Storm captain was denied the title after his opponent made a superb comeback from 0-2 deficit to inflict a harsh defeat on the St. Luke’s sophomore.

With other results from Thomas Arnold ‘22, Peter Cioffi ‘23, Angad Sethi ‘24, and Cameron Hill ‘21, the team had a great finish to the season. Head Coach Brian Mathias was pleased with how his youthful squad competed: “Our young squad, most of whom were brand new to the varsity level, worked hard work during the winter to raise their level of play and supported each other superbly along the way. To have our most experienced members - sophomores - perform so well in the final event of the season was very rewarding. I’m already fired up to see what this team can achieve next year.”
