Golf Team Breaks Records against Rye

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Golf team put on an outstanding show on Thursday, April 25, to defeat Rye Country Day School and to record its lowest combined score in program history.

Captain Jack Maguire ‘19 tore up the Country Club of New Canaan course to finish one under par with Co-Captain Mark Gertsen ‘19 just one shot behind with an even-par 34. Sophomore Ben Loomis shot a two-over-par 36 and Matt Laguzza ‘19 produced one of his finest displays for the Storm shooting a 37. Blake Haden ‘21 rounded out the top five scores with a 41 to give St. Luke’s a combined total of 181 and an average score of just 36.2.

Maguire was proud of the way his team performed: “We had a really good day and were solid all the way through the line-up. It’s an honor to play with this group and to be part of a team that set a new record for St. Luke’s.”

The win came a day after the Storm tied with Hamden Hall School on Wednesday, April 24, at Yale Golf Course. Jack Fitzgibbon ‘21 shot the lowest score of the day for the Storm with a 38.

On a blustery day in New Haven, the historic course proved to be a stern test, but both sets of players delivered some fine golf in an enthralling encounter.

The Storm is currently 4-1-1 for the season and travels back to Yale on Wednesday, May 1, to play Hopkins School. In another busy week, the team also plays in the Greenwich Invitational Tournament on Thursday, May 2, at Stanwich Golf Club.
