Happy Homecoming For Storm Athletics

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s Homecoming 2019 proved to be another happy one for our Storm teams as four of the five varsity contests ended in victories.

The festivities got underway with the annual Cross Country Fun Run, as a large group of students, parents, and alumni enjoyed some cool temperatures during the 5k event.

Girls Varsity Soccer then took to the field for a noon showdown with FAA rivals Holy Child School. The Storm got off to the perfect start and scored after just 25 seconds when Lea Panagiotidis finished off a wonderful passing move. GVS went on to win the game 7-1. Panagiotidis scored a hattrick and Julia Lombardo ‘21, Layla Magnussen ‘22, Jackie Thompson ‘20, and Ryan Weil ‘21 all scored to cap off a wonderful performance.

The St. Luke’s Varsity Field Hockey team also won its contest against Cheshire Academy 7-1. Two goals each from Abby O’Meara ‘20 and Lucy Ehlers ‘21, and one apiece for Izzy Schuh ‘24, Kylie Galvin ‘23 and Mia Mitchell ‘20, gave the Storm its biggest win of the season to date. Lili Messina ‘22 and Andrea DiTeodoro ‘22 had standout performances on offense, while Bella Martino and Quinn Gregorich had great games in goal to keep the Fighting Cats to a single score.

Varsity Football hosted Portsmouth Abbey in a battle of two tremendous defenses. The Storm came out on top 9-0 after Austin Anderson intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. St. Luke’s had taken a 3-0 lead on Andrew Lau’s 32-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The win sees the Storm improve to 4-1 overall on the season.

Boys Varsity Soccer was up next and faced a tough battle with FAA rivals King School. In an extremely entertaining game, the Storm found themselves down early 0-2 in the second half. Jake Kavan ‘21 pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to play but SLS couldn’t find the equalizer, despite constant pressure on the King goal.

The final contest of the day was inside Carey Gymnasium as Varsity Volleyball faced FAA rival Greens Farms Academy. In an enthralling contest, St. Luke’s raced out to a 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20. The Dragons pulled one back but the Storm answered by winning a nail-biting fourth set 25-23 to complete the 3-1 victory. Molly Kim ‘21 made a phenomenal play to win the game, running down a dig and sending it over the net from the back wall. Sierra Taylor ‘20 had a standout performance hitting .667%, with 10 kills on 15 attempts and zero errors.
