Storm Stun Hornets To Improve to 8-0 in FAA
St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball produced a stunning display to beat current FAA Champions Hamden Hall 87-48 on Tuesday, January 28.
This was the first time the two teams had met since last year’s championship game when the Hornets claimed victory in overtime during a thrilling contest.
The Storm played arguably its best game of the season to remain undefeated in FAA play, limiting Hamden to just 15 second-half points.
It was a real team effort with five Storm players hitting double digits. Gavin Greene ‘20 was top scorer for the Storm with 16, Justin Covington ‘22 hit 15, Cole Bryant ‘20 chipped in 14, Lewis Cropper ‘21 added 13 and Jah’khi Washington ‘22 scored 10, including an incredible alley-oop and two powerful slam dunks.
As impressive as St. Luke’s was on the offensive end, the team was equally impressive on the defensive side of the ball. The Storm outrebounded its opponents 48-22 and shut down the Hornets talented shooters throughout the second period.
Head Coach Tony Newsom was pleased with the victory but remained grounded: “One of our goals is to win the regular season title. This was step eight in that process, but we have a long way to go with three of our last four games on the road. We are just trying to take it one game at a time.”
The Storm followed Tuesday’s victory up with another impressive win against Master School (CT) on Thursday, January 30. In a very open game St. Luke’s edged the Lions 87-80. The two wins see St. Luke’s Varsity Basketball improve to 11-3 overall and 8-0 in FAA League play.
