St. Luke's Squash Preps For Nationals

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Boys and Girls Varsity Squash teams are busy preparing for the 2020 Head U.S. High School Team Squash Championships.

The annual tournament will be held in Hartford, Connecticut, between Feb. 21-23, and the Storm teams are excited to be back in the state capitol.

It has been a challenging year for the squash squads, with injuries and illness creating weekly disruptions to both lineups.

However, morale is high, and the Storm hopes to travel to the showcase event as close to full strength as possible. Boys Captain James Kontulis ‘21 is the only absentee for the Storm, as he continues to recover from ACL surgery.

Kontulis will travel with the team and use his experience to guide some of the younger members, who will compete in the event for the first time: “I am obviously disappointed not to be able to compete this year, but excited to see what our young squad can do. I think the size of the event and the number of people watching can be intimidating for anyone who hasn’t played in this tournament, so I am going to try to help our players stay relaxed and focus on their game. It’s an awesome competition to play in, so I just want them to enjoy the experience.”

Both teams are waiting to see the draw for the tournament and have been working hard to get ready. Kontoulis concluded: “Everyone is focused on their preparation. We are all excited to get there and see what we can achieve. Our team is a close group. We enjoy being around each other, and everyone is very kind and respectful. I always look forward to seeing everybody during practice at the end of the day.”
