Middle School Art Challenges During St. Luke’s at Home

From MS Art Teacher Haley Wulfman:

As news of COVID-19 became more and more of a reality, other art educators and I asked ourselves the same question: How are we going to teach art online? What might this look like?

Out of this thinkspace grew the idea of Art Challenges - prompts and lessons that introduce artists, artworks, ways of thinking, new approaches to materials, cultural institutions, and more. I've found these to be a wonderful way for students to continue to have a sense of choice and agency in their visual arts learning, while also still enjoying rich learning experiences from home.
Beyond pens and paper, many students who first thought they had no art supplies at home have since realized the potential of the materials that surround them every day: a collection of toothpicks, fruit skins, sand, and others. Lines have been drawn in chocolate syrup, patterns made of noodles, and shadows have been transformed to musical staffs and a flying Snoopy. Students are finding entirely new expressive potential in pens, pencils, and other more traditional arts materials, too. Blessed as we all have been until now to enjoy a beautifully appointed art studio, St. Luke's students remind us that, no matter the circumstance, true creators create - we are surrounded by potential, if we train our minds to search for it.

We look forward to sharing Art Challenges and student artworks with you. Please enjoy the wonderfully innovative creations of our students. You are invited to join in, too!
