St. Luke’s Asian Affinity Group Hosts a Celebration for the Mid-Autumn Festival

S.A.
Moli Ma ‘21, Emma Seel ‘21 and the Asian Affinity Group hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. As Moli shared:

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an annual holiday celebrated in many Asian countries. It has a long history, beginning more than 3,000 years ago when the Chinese emperor worshiped the moon for bountiful autumn harvests. In modern times, we observe this holiday by eating mooncakes and spending time with family. There is an emphasis on how the full, round moon symbolizes unity. As part of our celebration, the Asian Affinity Group partnered with our Chinese teachers to bring some Mid-Autumn Festival-related activities to St. Luke’s, where we will serve round ice cream sandwiches at lunch and hold a Gimkit game about Mid-Autumn Fest.

Middle School Mandarin Teacher Gavin Immer says, "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival everyone!"

Jingjing Lai, St. Luke’s Upper School Mandarin Teacher and a faculty advisor of the Asian Affinity Group was extremely proud of the leadership demonstrated by Moli and Emma, who planned the celebration and were a great example of what it means to go Above and Beyond.

“As a Chinese teacher and Asian Affinity Group advisor, I think it's important for our community to learn about other cultures and see how different cultures around the world share many core values, such as maintaining strong family bonds. I am happy to support student initiatives that embrace diversity and proud to see the leadership Emma and Moli demonstrated throughout the planning process. They showed initiative when they reached out to St. Luke’s Middle School Mandarin teacher Gavin Immer and me, designed the posters and digital slides, and collaborated with dining services on serving a round dessert. They are truly amazing!”

Moli also shared this tip: "Look out for the full moon on Oct. 2 — part of our myth for this festival says you may be able to spot a rabbit up there!"
