Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Through Art and Music
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, students in Spanish III and Spanish III Honors spent the fall studying Latin art and music. This project not only immersed students in Latin culture, but also connected to St. Luke’s equity and inclusion work by having students reflect on how the art mirrored different social identities or represented their own identities.
One student shared, “I learned that although many people have differences, we shouldn't let that stop us from finding what we have in common. I will use this discovery in the future to focus on what connections I have in common with new people that I meet, rather than finding the differences between us.”
Spanish teacher Carrie Matteo shared more about this project in the excerpt below.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), students identified and researched visual art and music by Latino artists, wrote summaries on their findings, and spoke to how visual art and song either reflect their own social identities or provide an opportunity for them to see more clearly into someone else's social identity that is different from their own.
Surrounding this, we made identity molecules — drawings of what we most identify as — and read a number of articles about the Latino art scene, specifically underrepresentation of Latino artists in museums and galleries and organizations. Throughout, students worked on developing their arts vocabulary and past tense narration. Last week’s final assessment required students to discuss in a conversation and summarize in writing what they've learned in this unit about Latino art and identity.
At the conclusion of this project, students created this gallery site to display their findings. They are also working to get the thoughts and perspectives of students at our partner school in Argentina.
