Baseball Back in the Hunt

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Baseball Team has been in fine form this season, losing just one game in its opening nine contests.

The one loss came in the second game of a double-header against Cheshire Academy on Saturday, April 17, when the Storm were edged 6-7 by the Cats.

The resurgence of the Storm coincides with the appointment of Head Coach Sam Colon, who is in the midst of his first full season after the cancellation of the 2020 campaign.

St. Luke’s has beaten Greens Farms Academy and Greenwich Country Day School twice, as well as Christian Heritage, Harvey School, Cheshire Academy, and King School once.

The form the team has shown has put it in contention to compete for the FAA league championship, which would be the first one since 2006. Colon believes the work his players have put in since last year will help them challenge for honors: “These young men have been working tremendously hard, both on and off the field. The recent success is a result of their determination and focus. We know we have a strong team, but we have to back that up on the field every time we play so we can meet our goal of winning an FAA title.”

Ryan Higgins ‘21, Lewis Cropper ‘21, and Jack Ellis ‘21 have been outstanding on the mound. Cropper, Everett Andersen ‘22, Teddy Cashman ‘22, Justin Higgins ‘23, and Ethan Righter ‘23 have provided hot bats to help alleviate some of the pressure on the pitching rotation.

St. Luke’s is currently 3-0 in FAA league play and will travel to Rye Country Day School on Saturday, May 8, before hosting Brunswick on Monday, May 10. The team completes its league schedule with two road games at Hopkins on Saturday, May 15, and Hamden Hall on Saturday, May 22. Colon hopes his team can remain focused and continue to play the kind of baseball they have so far this year: “I believe in their ability and want them to share that same belief. It’s a quiet confidence that turns into a storm when we are on the field. We need that to continue for the rest of the season.”
