Outdoor Athletic Awards Sees Record Numbers

Daniel Clarke
The annual St. Luke’s Athletics Awards Night on Tuesday, June 1, celebrated the accomplishments of all 19 Upper School sports and our student-athletes.

The event was held outside for the first time in its history, on the Class of 2018 Field, to allow students, families and faculty to attend without restrictions.

St. Luke’s celebrated a record number of students (305) who participated in Upper School athletics. More than 350 people enjoyed the festivities, which were also livestreamed, another first for the occasion.

Athletic Director Mike West, Associate Athletic Director Jennifer Besgen, Assistant Athletic Director Anna Knechtel, Assistant Athletic Trainer Nicole Guido, and Sports Information Specialist Dan Clarke collaborated on the event, where the outstanding achievements of St. Luke's student-athletes and the community members who helped them succeed were recognized.

Guests were invited to take a look back at the year with highlight videos dedicated to all three seasons, as well as a special one devoted to the Class of 2021 athletes. The 35 three-sport athletes received special recognition, as well as the 51 team captains and the 18 student-athletes who will continue their commitment to athletics and play at the collegiate level next year.

Zach Amendola ‘21 and Liam Patty ‘21 were two of only a handful of students across the league to receive the FAA Scholar-Athlete Award. To qualify for this accolade, a student-athlete has to rank in the top 10% of their senior class and have taken at least three Advanced Placement courses. Nominees must also be multi-sport athletes who were  honored as All-League FAA athletes within the last 12 months.

West was delighted to see so many in attendance and thrilled with how the evening unfolded: “It was a great evening to recognize and celebrate this year’s athletic accomplishments. The culture of multi-sport participation is strong, and the desire to get the most out of each and every moment together was on full display throughout every season. The awards celebration was an opportunity to reinforce our strong sense of community and camaraderie as we put the exclamation point on a year like no other.”
