Fifth Graders Host Native American Art Exhibition
St. Luke’s fifth graders recently completed a unit on Native American culture and displayed what they learned in an exhibition on Friday, Feb. 11. Using a cross-curricular model, students studied Native American tribes in history class and completed other elements of their projects in English and art classes.
At the exhibition, the students proudly displayed artifacts that they had constructed in art class. To accompany their projects, students wrote essays in history class about what they had learned and created fictional stories (inspired by Native American myths and legends) in English class.
It was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with my colleagues on the fifth-grade team and to watch the kids work so hard on their research and writing. During the exhibition, students, faculty, staff, and fifth-grade parents were invited to peruse the work and hear directly from the students about what they learned regarding the culture and history of the Native American tribes they studied.
