Girls Tennis Continues Strong Start With Win Against Millbrook

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s Girls varsity tennis beat Millbrook School on Wednesday, April 27, to continue its strong start to the season. The 7-0 win over the Mustangs improved the team’s overall record to 4-2 for the season.

The team got off to a perfect start when Kelly Nuener ‘24 won the number one match 6-0, 6-0. Layla Magnusen ‘22 followed up with another impressive victory, playing the number two match and beating her opponent 6-0, 6-1.

C.C. Buono ‘23 won her match 6-2, 6-2, and Macy Millones ‘23 completed her singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

St. Luke’s also swept the doubles matches, with Sophie Dekker ‘23 and Kiley Galvin ‘23 winning 6-4, 6-2, and Izzy Levi ‘24 and Ainsley Birmingham ‘25 recording a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Maddie Fredericks ‘22 and Kate Edwards ‘25 also recorded a win. Unfortunately, their opponent had to withdraw from the match, giving Maddie and Kate the win.

It was a great response from the Storm, after a disappointing loss to Greenwich Academy on Monday, April 25. Captain Layla Magnusen was pleased with how her teammates bounced back to get their season back on track: “After the GA loss, it was really important for us to win Wednesday’s match to keep morale high. Although we won all of the matches, there was some good competition, and the windy conditions made it tough, too. Having each other’s support really pulled us through.”

St. Luke’s has recorded wins against Wilton High School, Holy Child, and Greenwich Country Day, with its only other loss against Greens Farms Academy.

The Storm has three huge FAA contests coming up, when it travels to Rye Country Day School on Friday, April 28, before it welcomes Sacred Heart Greenwich to the Hilltop on Tuesday, May 3. GVT is on the road again at Hopkins School on Thursday, May 5.

Magnusen knows the challenges ahead but hopes to finish the season as well as it has started: “This run of matches will be tough, so I’m glad we’re going into it on a good note. I hope everyone will continue to be enthusiastic during the last few weeks of the season. It’s going by quickly, but these upcoming weeks are very important. We’re really hoping to end the season with a good record, and I think high spirits and energy, on and off the court, will push us in the right direction.”
