After a short week with little practice, the Maroon Storm showed up full of confidence from their victory over Fairfield Country Day School. When their opponents from Fairfield's Unquowa School arrived on campus, our boys made the mistake of predicting an easy success. Unquowa had a coed squad of 11, with the goalie appearing to be among the smallest of the players.

Our boys went into the match judging the book by its cover and were in for a surprise. In the first half, Unquowa showed that they were well prepared. They were tactically sound, tackled hard, took advantage of our loose passes, and played with a tight defensive formation that confounded the Storm. Their goalkeeper took control of any ball sent into the 18-yard box and left the Storm with few good opportunities. We played with a defensive mindset, and our few goal-bound shots were either high, wide, or wildly speculative. The first-half whistle sounded: 0-0.

At halftime, the boys reflected on their missed opportunities and went out on the field with newfound determination. Storm clouds gathered. The boys adopted a more forward-looking approach. Heads up, eyes forward, and looking for opportunities down the field. Their refined attitude brought immediate results as Aaryaman Mehta '27 was sent a leading pass just over the halfway line. He used his explosive speed to catch up to it and hammer it past a flatfooted goalkeeper. We did the same less than two minutes later as Aaryama bagged his second goal of the match. Several minutes later, it was Max Bravo-Ferrer '28 getting on the scoreboard. He was released into a scoring position by a beautiful pass from midfielder Luke Riley '27, who read the field perfectly. Alex Hill '27 was next to score with a ferocious ball that seemed shot from a cannon. As if to make up for earlier missed opportunities, the boys maintained their commitment to playing with the same intensity through the second half. This resulted in a goal by Josh Specter '28 and another by Max. Not appearing on the score sheet but making this victory possible was the play of Padro Memoria '28. His play confounded defenders, and his creativity resulted in multiple scoring opportunities. Final whistle: 6-0.

Thomas Merrill '27 was untroubled most of the match, but he was called into action late in the second half. He rose to the challenge, made terrific saves, and came away with the clean sheet victory.
