The St. Luke’s Middle School Boys Squash Team finished runners-up at the 2023 U.S. Middle School Squash Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Storm traveled to the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in the heart of downtown Philly for the three-day tournament between Friday, Jan. 27 and Sunday, Jan 29.

The seven-man team consisted of William Tucker ’30, Alex Hill ’27, Mason Coleman ’29, Ryan Fulk ’30, Jack Aronian ’27, Cullen Douglas ’27, and EJ Mathias ’30.

St. Luke’s was ranked #4 in Division III so received a bye in the first round. The team was drawn against William Penn Charter School in the quarterfinal round on Saturday morning. William Tucker ’30, who was undefeated the entire tournament, got the Storm off to the perfect start winning his number one matchup 3-0. Alex Hill ’27 and Jack Aronian ’27 also picked up vital wins in a close 3-2 victory.

Next up for the Storm was a semifinal contest against Valley Forge Middle School of Wayne, Pennsylvania. William, Alex, and Jack were again victorious to give St. Luke’s another 3-2 win to seal the team’s place in Sunday’s final.

St. Luke’s was pitted against Moses Brown School from Providence, Rhode Island in the championship match and, despite a win from William in the number one slot, came up just short against a talented Quaker squad.

The team had an enormous amount of fun on the trip and also got to see an Ivy League squash match between the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. UPenn (currently ranked second in the nation) won a tremendous contest 7-2.

Head Coach Cythia Briggs was thrilled with the overall experience for her team: “It was an amazing weekend of excellent squash competition, team camaraderie and best of all, fun. I am particularly proud of the excellent sportsmanship exhibited by our SLS players throughout the weekend. Half of our seven-man team was comprised of younger players so, hopefully, they were inspired by the 8th grade leaders and are looking forward to several more years of competing in this annual national tournament.”
