Fifth Graders Have Fun with Fractions

Melissa Zurkowski, Fifth Grade Math Teacher
My fifth grade math class students are learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. To begin the unit, we discussed how to round fractions. Students could see the importance of using number lines and benchmark fractions to help them round. We talked about how to decide whether a fraction is closer to zero, half, or one. Next, we discussed why we could add fractions with like denominators but not with unlike denominators. To see the steps in action, students created a hot chocolate jar using the ingredients to demonstrate fractions. Of course, you can’t make hot chocolate without actually drinking the tasty treat. At the end of the lesson, students enjoyed a nice warm cup of cocoa.
