SLS Civil Rights Trip Gallery Exhibition

By Jeorge Yankura, Upper School Art Teacher
St. Luke’s School is proud to announce the installation of works that highlight the importance and impact of a recent Civil Rights Tour by several members of the faculty and staff.

Over March break, 12 members of the St. Luke’s Community traveled to historic sites in Alabama, where they bore witness to the struggle for civil and human rights in the twentieth century. Each participant captured photographs and recorded commentary on significant aspects of the tour.

In collaboration with St. Luke’s Art Department, their work is now on display in the Class of 2019 Art Gallery. Their photographs and accompanying QR codes linking to the audio commentary are featured in the gallery, along with a mock voting booth housing two examples of the deliberately impossible state literacy tests created so people would not be able to register to vote.  The gallery also features videos of the toured locations, printed materials from the sites, and a curated playlist featuring music from the Civil Rights era. Work will be on display until mid-May and then again from mid-June through August.
All members and friends of the St. Luke’s School Community are invited to experience this exhibit.
