Middle Schoolers Join This Year’s Founders’ Cup

Sarah Westerberg-Egan, Middle School Student Life Coordinator
Embracing Head of School Mary Halpin Carter's concept of One St. Luke’s, the St. Luke’s Middle School recently surprised students by launching its first-ever participation in the Founders’ Cup. St. Luke’s Founders’ Cup, an SLS tradition that dates back to the 1940s and reimagined by the Upper School last year, is a community life program designed to foster belonging, school spirit, and community.

Students were sorted into one of three “houses” named in honor of our school’s founders, Blakely, Kidd, and von Fabrice. Each “house” represents different qualities and values vital to SLS. Students will remain in their assigned house throughout their time at St. Luke’s.  After the reveal, students spent the morning with their house getting to know one another, meeting their house "buddy" (7th/8th graders paired with 5th/6th graders), and developing a house identity through learning about their founder and creating a house motto, chant, and crest. The day concluded with students participating in a house trivia game and adding their handprints to their house flags. Later in the week, students ended their days with a house competition, battling in "Minute to Win It" games and tug of war.

These community-building activities will be woven into the daily life of our Middle School program to encourage connection, pride, and teamwork. Working in partnership with me and the Middle School Student Council, the Founders' Cup Committee, comprised of Middle School students, will help develop, plan, and carry out exciting house events and shape the program's future.
