St. Luke's Girls Hockey Wins First-Ever Contest
In its inaugural season, the St. Luke’s Girls Hockey team played and won its first-ever contest on Monday, 2/12, in a scrimmage against Greenwich Academy’s junior varsity squad.
St. Luke’s has never had an all-girls hockey team, but with a rising number of girls interested in playing, dedicated coaches, and a newly formed partnership with King School, the players hit the ice for a wonderful winter season. While each program continues to grow, the two schools agreed to combine teams to provide players with more robust practices and increased ice time. The collaboration between the schools nicknamed “The Sting,” a clever combination of Storm and King, trained hard this season and came out flying in the scrimmage, scoring six goals to the Gators two for an impressive first outing.
After the historic contest, Director of Athletics and Physical Education Anna Knechtel honored the two seniors on the team, Kathleen Coffey and Alexandra Young.
It was a tremendous way to cap off a fun first season for Sting hockey, and Knechtel was full of admiration for everyone involved. “This team worked together, and any silly rivalry was pushed aside in the name of ice hockey - it was a display of sportsmanship and community at its finest. To walk into the rink and see us winning was just the icing on the cake.”
