Middle School Arts at SLS is about discovering what you can do and where your creativity can take you. Whether you arrive with a clear passion or are just beginning to explore, you’ll stretch your abilities, uncover new possibilities, and take pride in your growth. Just as important, you’ll learn what it means to contribute to something bigger than yourself and the confidence that comes from creating alongside others.

Performing Arts

Music

Whether you're picking up an instrument for the first time or already love to sing, music at SLS is about building skills, finding your voice, and making meaningful connections along the way.

You’ll sing, play, and collaborate in Band and Chorus, and some Middle Schoolers jump into the student-favorite Blues Band, which brings down the house every fall. From first rehearsal to final performance, you’ll build rhythm, focus, and the kind of confidence that lasts well beyond the stage.

Theater

In Middle School Theater, you’ll jump into every part of putting on a show. Acting opportunities begin as early as 5th grade, with plenty of chances to build confidence, creativity, and collaboration on stage. Each year, students take part in two after-school productions—the Winter Musical and the Spring Play—learning the craft of rehearsal and performance.

By 7th grade, you can also step into Technical Theater, an afternoon activity open through 12th grade. Crew members design, build, and program scenery, lighting, costumes, and sound under adult mentorship, taking on real leadership roles as part of the production team.

Whether you’re delivering lines or running cues, you’ll see how much teamwork and imagination it takes to bring a performance to life. At SLS, students really do run the show.

Fine Arts

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and maybe get a little paint on them. In Middle School, you’ll sketch with pencil and charcoal, shape clay into bowls, hearts, and other wobbly masterpieces, bring papier mâché creatures to life, and (in 8th grade) try your hand at digital design.

Along the way, you’ll pick up real artistic skills, like how to observe more closely, reflect on your work, and turn creative sparks into something shareable. You don’t need to be “good at art.” You just need to be willing to give it a shot.
