Whether you're painting, performing, building, or singing your heart out, you’ll find the space—and encouragement—to take risks, try new things, and grow creatively.
Artistic Pathways in Middle School
Visual Arts
Explore & Express
Get ready to roll up your sleeves—and maybe get a little paint on them. In Middle School, you’ll sketch with pencil and charcoal, shape clay into bowls, hearts, and other wobbly masterpieces, bring papier mâché creatures to life, and (in 8th grade) try your hand at digital design.
Along the way, you’ll pick up real artistic skills—like how to observe more closely, reflect on your work, and turn creative sparks into something shareable. You don’t need to be “good at art.” You just need to be willing to give it a shot.
Music
Find Your Sound
Whether you're learning which end of the trombone to blow into or singing loud enough to scare your dog, music at SLS is all about connection—and making noise in the best way.
You’ll play, sing, collaborate, and probably laugh a lot in Band and Chorus, and plenty of Middle Schoolers have the chops to join the epic, student-favorite Blues Band, which brings down the house every fall. From first rehearsal to final performance, you'll build rhythm, focus, and the kind of confidence that carries way beyond the stage.
Theater
Step Into the Spotlight
Middle School Theater is not for the faint of heart—and that’s kind of the point. One minute you’re going full Broadway, the next you’re backstage, landing tech cues like you're flying a plane in a thunderstorm—with glitter on your hands and someone whispering “WHERE’S THE PROP CHICKEN?” in your ear. You’ll design costumes out of cardboard and questionable fabric, build a set that somehow stands, and pull it all together in time for curtain.
Stage fright? Optional. Making theater magic with your crew? Guaranteed.
Everyone’s an Artist Here
Middle School Arts at SLS is bold, hands-on, and often a little chaotic—in the best way. You’ll try things you never expected, make stuff you're actually proud of, and probably laugh a lot along the way.
Come visit. We’ll cue the lights, crank the amp, and hand you something messy.
