The Upper School offers many opportunities to explore the arts in various forms. In Theater, you can step into acting, design, and stagecraft, bringing stories to life both on stage and behind the scenes. In Music, you can sing in Chorale, play in Band, or dive into Digital Music Production to compose and record your own work. In Fine Arts, you can experiment with materials, techniques, and design while studying visual traditions from many cultures. Along the way, you’ll collaborate with peers and mentors and discover new ways to stretch your creativity.

Performing Arts

Theater

Theater in Upper School is both a vehicle for self-expression and a way to better understand the human condition. You’ll study acting through the techniques of Uta Hagen and Sanford Meisner, building skills in vulnerability, authenticity, and emotional connection. As you progress, advanced classes and independent studies give you space to deepen your craft. You’ll also explore design and stagecraft, using lights, costumes, sound, and scenery to create whole worlds on stage.

Beyond class, robust after-school productions invite you to take on real roles as a performer, designer, stage manager, or crew member, all under the mentorship of skilled adults who guide the process. Through collaboration, you’ll learn to “step into yourself,” awaken your artistic passions, and listen with the ear of your heart, carrying with you insights and skills that last well beyond the final curtain.

Music

Every musician finds their voice differently. Some through improvisation. Some through structure. Some through trial, error, and a dozen takes in Logic. At SLS, you’ll have the space and the support to explore all of it. Music here is both an academic subject and a language of its own, one that lets you communicate, collaborate, and connect with the world around you.

You’ll choose from pathways like Chorale, where you refine tone, diction, and breath control while singing music from many cultures and periods; Band, where you perform in both Concert and Jazz ensembles and strengthen skills in musicianship, theory, and improvisation; and Digital Music Production, where you use tools like MIDI, synthesizers, and sequencing software to compose, record, and score original pieces.

Whether you’re rehearsing for a performance, producing in the studio, or sight-reading with your ensemble, you’ll build creativity, confidence, and an artistic voice that feels uniquely yours.

This isn’t a school where the arts stay politely in the background. Here, they spill into the halls, crank up the volume, and refuse to be ignored.

You’ll pick up new tools, join big ideas, and work alongside people who care as much as you do. Some students have been creating for years. Others just jump in.

Everyone’s figuring it out as they go—and that’s half the fun.
